The Regional Minister for Western North, Wilbert Petty Brentum, has tasked all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) in the region to institute proactive measures aimed at preventing flooding with the setting in of the rainy season. This directive comes in response to the increasing risks posed by human activities such as building in waterways, the placement of containers in water passages, and the blockage of gutters with waste.
These practices, the Minister noted, have the potential to cause severe damage to lives and property if not addressed urgently. In his statement, Hon. Brentum emphasized the need for strong enforcement of existing regulations on urban planning and sanitation. He called on MMDCEs to collaborate with local assemblies, environmental officers, and community leaders to identify risk zones and take necessary steps, including the demolition of illegal structures, to safeguard lives.
The Minister expressed concern over the persistent flooding incidents that have been largely avoidable, attributing them to negligence and disregard for public safety protocols.Furthermore, the Minister encouraged farmers across the region to make the most of the rainy season by cultivating both food and cash crops.
He highlighted that this period presents an opportunity to boost agricultural productivity, which will, in turn, enhance food security, stabilize market prices, and provide farmers with substantial income. The Minister re-affirmed government’s commitment to supporting farmers through various initiatives and urged them to take advantage of these support schemes.
Mr.Brentum also cautioned farmers to be mindful of weather patterns and to prepare adequately for possible heavy rains and storms. He advised them to adopt resilient farming practices and to stay alert to weather warnings issued by the Meteorological Department.
The Minister stated that while the rains are essential for farming, they can be destructive if not well managed, especially in areas prone to erosion and flooding. The Minister reassured the public of the Regional Coordinating Council’s continuous engagement with stakeholders to ensure safety and productivity during the season.
He urged residents to desist from practices that compromise the environment and public safety. He also called on traditional authorities and opinion leaders to join in sensitizing their communities on the importance of proper waste disposal and responsible land use. This call to action by the Regional Minister is part of the broader government effort to enhance disaster preparedness and to promote sustainable agriculture in the Western North Region.
Citizens are encouraged to cooperate with local authorities to ensure a safe and productive rainy season.
