Western North NHIS Staff Dress in Fugu for Annual Performance Review in Sefwi Wiawso

The management and staff of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in the Western North Region attended their 2025 annual performance review meeting in colorful traditional fugu attire at Sefwi Wiawso, the regional capital.

The event coincided with Ghana Month, celebrated every March to mark the nation’s independence, and followed President John Dramani Mahama’s recent declaration of Wednesday as National Fugu Day.

Speaking to some district managers dressed in the traditional smock, they expressed pride and joy in wearing the attire, describing it as a symbol of Ghanaian identity and heritage.

It is our heritage that distinguishes us from other nations,” one manager said.

The fugu represents who we are as Ghanaians, and it’s time we showcase it to the world,” another added.
They further called on government to invest in local artisans who produce the fugu, saying such support would boost production and create employment opportunities.

When the government supports these artisans with resources, they can expand production and employ more young people, helping reduce unemployment, one participant emphasized.

The staff also commended the President for instituting National Fugu Day, noting that it has helped promote cultural pride and unity across the country.

Although traditionally worn in northern Ghana, the fugu has gained nationwide popularity, with many Ghanaians now wearing it on special occasions.

Participants also urged the Ministry of Education to include traditional attires such as fugu and kente in the school curriculum to encourage children to learn about and appreciate Ghana’s cultural heritage.
