“Wontumi’s Gold Hunt Wrecks Our Roads – Sefwi Aburonehia Residents Explode”

Mr. Eric Okrah, Assembly Member for Sefwi Aburonenhia in the Akontombra District of the Western North Region, has expressed strong disappointment in the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.

According to Okrah, Chairman Wontumi visited the area and promised to construct their deteriorating roads. However, instead of fulfilling his promise, the assemblyman claims Wontumi has worsened the condition of the road due to alleged self-interest and illegal mining activities (galamsey).

“Chairman Wontumi brought machines to work on the roads, but there were no official signboards or documentation to indicate it was a sanctioned project,” Okrah explained. “We later realized he was carrying out illegal mining operations along the roadside, constructing the road in areas where he believed gold could be found.”

The poor construction has caused severe damage to portions of the road, affecting transport and economic activities in the area. Motorists, including drivers and motorbike riders, are said to be struggling due to the broken and hazardous conditions.

The poor state of the road is making it difficult for farmers and workers to move around, and it’s also affecting the delivery of goods and services,” Okrah added. He is calling on the current government to urgently intervene and properly construct the road to ease the burden on residents, especially farmers.

Residents of Aburonehia have echoed the assemblyman’s concerns. In interviews, community members confirmed that Chairman Wontumi’s activities have led to the destruction of their roads, making life even more difficult.
