Youth Activist Questions Ghana’s Development at 69

A youth activist, Oscar Duku Junior, has raised concerns about the pace of national development as Ghana marks 69 years of independence.

In a statement reflecting on the celebration, Mr. Duku Junior noted that while the country continues to commemorate the historic declaration of freedom by Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah, many citizens are still questioning whether the nation is making the progress its founders envisioned.

According to him, Independence Day activities often see streets decorated in the national colours and citizens expressing pride in the country’s freedom, with the youth, elderly, and political leaders joining in the celebrations. However, he believes the occasion should also serve as a moment of reflection on the nation’s development.

Mr. Duku Junior pointed out that despite nearly seven decades of independence, several challenges continue to confront the country. He mentioned unemployment among graduates, the continued importation of goods such as tomatoes and second-hand clothing, and the lack of adequate infrastructure in some communities.

He further expressed concern that in some parts of the country students still study under trees due to inadequate classroom facilities, while poor road networks continue to pose dangers to road users.

The youth activist therefore called on leaders and citizens to reflect deeply on the country’s direction and renew their commitment to the ideals of development, self-reliance, and national progress that inspired Ghana’s independence struggle.
