Two people have died after being trapped in a suspected illegal mining pit at Sefwi Datano in the Bodi District of the Western North Region.
According to the Unit Committee Chairman for the Datano Electoral Area, Joseph Debrah, the incident occurred around 4:00 a.m. after an announcement was made at the local information centre that two individuals had been trapped in a galamsey pit.

Mr Debrah said he rushed to the scene, where it was confirmed that sand had covered the two individuals. They were later retrieved from the pit but were found dead.
He identified one of the deceased as Nana Dibi, a resident of Juaboso, while the identity of the second victim had not been established.
The two deceased persons are believed to have been below 40 years of age.
The bodies were conveyed by the Bodi Police to the government mortuary in Juaboso for further investigation.
The incident has once again highlighted the dangers associated with illegal mining activities and the need for improved safety measures to prevent further loss of lives.
