The Ayanfuri community in the Upper Denkyira West District of the Central Region has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of the Mmratehene of the Ayanfuri Traditional Area, Nana Kwabena Okyere. The chief reportedly died after accidentally shooting himself while dancing during the final funeral rites of the Ayanfuri Abusuapanin.
Grief has engulfed the Ayanfuri Traditional Area following the tragic death of the Mmratehene, Nana Kwabena Okyere, during a funeral ceremony held on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
According to reports, the unfortunate incident occurred during the final funeral rites of the Ayanfuri Abusuapanin.
The chief reportedly accidentally discharged a pump-action gun and shot himself while dancing at the funeral grounds.
He sustained a severe gunshot injury and was immediately rushed to the Ayanfuri Pentecost Hospital for emergency medical treatment.
However, he was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at the facility.
His body has since been deposited at the Dunkwa-On-Offin Municipal Hospital Mortuary pending preservation and further investigations.
The incident has thrown the entire Ayanfuri community into a state of shock and mourning, with residents and traditional leaders expressing deep sorrow over the sudden demise of the respected chief.
Police have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
