New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has criticised the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government over what he describes as its failure to fulfil key campaign promises, including the establishment of a Women’s Development Bank.
Speaking at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference in Kumasi on Saturday, October 3, 2026, Dr Bawumia claimed that nearly two years into the Mahama administration, the proposed Women’s Development Bank had not opened its doors to any market woman.
“The NDC also promised a Women’s Development Bank. Almost two years on, that bank has not opened its doors to a single market woman,” he said.
Dr Bawumia also accused the government of failing to deliver on its promise to reduce electricity tariffs under the 24-hour economy, arguing that electricity costs had instead increased and were putting pressure on households and small businesses.
He further criticised the government over the rising cost of transportation and rent, despite the decline in inflation.
On the stability of the Ghanaian cedi, Dr Bawumia credited the NPP government’s Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, which he said was introduced in 2021 on his recommendation.
He argued that the programme had contributed significantly to the relative stability of the cedi and the easing of inflation and interest rates.
Dr Bawumia also accused the NDC government of abandoning major programmes inherited from the NPP, including Agenda 111.
According to him, the stalled hospital projects would have expanded access to healthcare while creating employment opportunities for health professionals.
He also criticised the management of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme, claiming that the quality of meals provided to students had deteriorated and that some BECE graduates were being denied access to the programme.
Dr Bawumia maintained that the NPP would have continued and improved the programmes it introduced if it were in government.
