The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has dismissed reports circulating on social media suggesting that teacher unions have called off their ongoing industrial action.
The union says no official decision has been taken to return teachers to the classroom, as negotiations with the government remain unresolved.
The Western and Western North Regional Chairman of GNAT, Mr. Obeng Nyamekye, has therefore urged teachers and the general public to disregard a viral flyer claiming that teachers in the Western, Western North, Central and Ashanti regions have ended the strike.
Speaking in an interview on lord fm, Mr. Nyamekye said no official statement had been issued by the union announcing the suspension or termination of the industrial action.
He explained that the strike remains in force while teachers await further negotiations with the Ministry of Education and government over issues including conditions of service, promotions and delayed incentives.
Mr. Obeng Nyamekye acknowledged the impact of the industrial action on students, noting that teachers, many of whom are parents themselves, do not take pleasure in staying away from the classroom.
He, however, appealed to the government to urgently address the concerns raised by educators to enable teachers to return to the classroom and restore normal academic activities.
