The election of Pious Vincent Abakah as the Western North Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has made history for the Sefwi Wiawso Constituency, as it becomes the first time the party’s regional chairmanship has gone to the regional capital.
Since the creation of the Western North Region in 2018, the NPP has had two substantive regional chairpersons. Pious Abakah now becomes the third chairman to lead the party at the regional level.
The first chairman was Benjamin Williams Assuah, from the Bodi Constituency, who served from 2019 to 2022.
He was succeeded by Benjamin Armah of the Bia West Constituency, who served from 2022 to 2026. Armah later withdrew from the 2026 regional chairmanship contest.
For years, some NPP members in the Sefwi Wiawso Constituency expressed concern that, despite the constituency hosting the regional capital, it had not had the opportunity to lead the party at the regional level.
That changed when Pious Vincent Abakah presented himself as a candidate for the regional chairmanship.
His decision generated strong enthusiasm among party supporters and delegates in the Sefwi Wiawso Constituency, who rallied behind his candidature and treated the contest as an opportunity to make history for the constituency.
The 2026 contest featured candidates from Sefwi Wiawso, Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai and Juaboso constituencies, making it a closely watched race within the party.
Supporters and delegates from Sefwi Wiawso mounted a strong campaign for Abakah, with the constituency determined to secure the position for the regional capital.
Their efforts paid off as Pious Vincent Abakah emerged victorious by a margin of 15 votes, securing the regional chairmanship.
His victory has triggered excitement among NPP members and supporters in the Sefwi Wiawso Constituency, who see the result as a significant milestone in the political history of the constituency.
For the first time since the creation of the Western North Region, the NPP’s Regional Chairman will come from Sefwi Wiawso, the regional capital.
The victory is therefore being celebrated not only as a personal achievement for Pious Vincent Abakah, but also as a historic breakthrough for the Sefwi Wiawso Constituency within the NPP.
