Residents of Enchi in the Aowin Municipality of the Western North Region have expressed concern over poor sanitation and the improper disposal of waste in the community.
According to the residents, the attitude of some people towards sanitation has become a major concern, particularly the practice of dumping household waste into drains.
Speaking to Legendreport, some residents who sell along the roadside said some people collect waste from their homes and dispose of it in nearby drainage systems.
They explained that the practice often causes the drains to become choked, preventing the free flow of water, especially during rainfall.
According to them, stagnant water accumulates in the affected areas and produces an unpleasant smell, while also creating breeding grounds for mosquitoes, which can increase the risk of malaria.
The residents have therefore called on the Aowin Municipal Assembly to strengthen the enforcement of sanitation laws and take action against people who dispose of waste indiscriminately.
They also appealed to the Assembly to regularly clear choked drains and improve sanitation management in the community to help prevent mosquito breeding and reduce the risk of diseases such as malaria and cholera.
The residents further expressed concern about food vendors operating close to areas where stagnant water and foul smells persist.
They warned that the poor sanitary conditions could pose a public health risk, particularly where food is prepared and sold, and called for urgent attention from the relevant authorities.
The residents believe that improved enforcement of sanitation regulations, regular desilting of drains and greater public education could help improve the sanitary conditions in Enchi.
