Residents of Assin Awisam
in the Central Region have arrested a group of individuals alleged to be national security operatives over accusations of theft.

According to the residents, the suspects—reportedly dressed in uniform—arrived in the community on Thursday afternoon in a Mitsubishi pickup with registration number GS-8293-18 and a Toyota Voxy. They allegedly seized items including gold (quantity unspecified), mobile phones, and cash from community members.

Angered by the incident, some youth in the area deflated the tyres of the vehicles and attempted to attack the suspects. However, community elders intervened to prevent the situation from escalating into violence.
Residents further claimed that the group had previously been involved in acts of extortion within the community.

The suspects, said to be about eight in number, were later apprehended by residents and handed over to the police for further investigations.

An eyewitness, who claimed to be among the victims, alleged that some members of the group are associates of the Member of Parliament for Assin Central Constituency.
