Standard of Living: Residents of Juaboso Complain About High Costs of Rent

Residents of Juaboso in the Western North Region are expressing concern over the increasing cost of rent and the rising standard of living in the area.

According to residents, accommodation prices have increased significantly compared to previous years, making it difficult for ordinary workers and families to afford decent housing.

They explained that the annual rent for a single room now ranges between GH¢2,000 and GH¢2,500. In addition, many landlords are demanding two years’ rent in advance instead of accepting one year, creating further financial pressure on tenants.

Residents noted that many people are not engaging in any businesses that generate income, activities that will raise enough money to pay their rent.
Some residents attributed the sharp increase in rent prices to illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, in and around the area. They claimed that the influx of miners and other people connected to the mining industry has increased the demand for accommodation.

According to them, many of these newcomers can afford to pay higher rents, prompting some landlords to continually increase their prices. Residents alleged that when local tenants are unable to meet the new rent demands, landlords often rent their properties to galamsey operators who are willing to pay more.

The situation, they said, has made living in Juaboso increasingly difficult for ordinary residents. They are, therefore, appealing to landlords and homeowners to consider the economic challenges facing citizens and exercise moderation when increasing rent charges.
