The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has officially launched the government Free Primary Healthcare Policy in the Western North Region.
During the launched on 1st July 2026 at Sefwi Bodi, forms part of the government’s flagship health programmes aimed at strengthening primary healthcare and accelerating Ghana’s progress towards Universal Health Coverage.
Speaking at the launch, Akandoh explained that the policy is designed to provide free primary healthcare services through Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compounds, health centres, and clinics across the country.

He further disclosed that under the initiative, nurses and other healthcare professionals will conduct home visits to provide essential services such as health screening, blood pressure checks, health education, and the early detection of diseases.
The Health Minister clarified that the Free Primary Healthcare Policy complements the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). He explained that conditions not covered under the free primary healthcare package will be handled by the NHIS, while services beyond NHIS coverage will be supported by the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund (MahamaCares).

Akandoh noted that the government has supplied the necessary medical equipment and consumables to begin implementing the policy. He urged Ghanaians to protect the programme and continue to register and renew their National Health Insurance membership.
The Western North Regional Director of Health Services, Dr. Paulina Appiah, commended the government for introducing the initiative. She confirmed that the region has received the required medical supplies to implement the policy and assured residents that the Regional Health Directorate will work diligently to ensure quality primary healthcare reaches the doorstep of every one in the Western North Region.
