Former Deputy Finance Minister, Dr. Alex Ampaabeng, has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to handle the petitions against former presidential aspirant Kennedy Ohene Agyapong with wisdom, fairness, and restraint, warning that the outcome could have significant implications for the party’s unity and preparations for the 2028 general elections.

According to Dr. Ampaabeng, the decision by the NPP leadership to refer petitions against Kennedy Agyapong to the party’s Disciplinary Committee has generated widespread debate among party members and supporters across various social media platforms.

He noted that the issue comes at a delicate period when the party is still recovering from divisions that emerged during the presidential primaries and working to rebuild its internal cohesion following its defeat in the 2024 elections.

Dr. Ampaabeng acknowledged Kennedy Agyapong’s influence within the party, describing him as a politician with a strong grassroots appeal and a following that extends beyond traditional party structures.

Many young people, entrepreneurs, and ordinary Ghanaians identify with Kennedy Agyapong because they see him as someone who understands their realities and aspirations. His popularity should be viewed as an asset that can help broaden the party’s appeal,” he stated.

Commenting on recent tensions, including the Ken Must Go” demonstration that reportedly resulted in clashes among supporters, Dr. Ampaabeng stressed that the focus should not merely be on the petitions themselves but on the broader impact of the party’s response.

Whatever decision is taken in the coming days will not only affect Kennedy Agyapong. It will have consequences for party unity, grassroots morale, and public confidence in the NPP as we look ahead to 2028, he said.

He further expressed concern that internal disputes, personal attacks, and factional rivalries have dominated discussions within the party since the 2025 presidential primary process began, diverting attention from the opposition party’s responsibility to hold the government accountable and reconnect with the Ghanaian electorate.

Dr. Ampaabeng therefore urged party leaders and members to place the long-term interests of the NPP above personal ambitions and emotions.

The NPP was not built overnight. Every supporter matters. Beyond the personalities, petitions, and media exchanges, the real task before us is rebuilding public trust, reuniting our base, and presenting a credible and united front for the 2028 elections,” he emphasized.

He also paid tribute to ordinary party supporters across the country who continue to sacrifice their time, resources, and livelihoods for the party’s success.

According to him, many loyal supporters have invested greatly in the NPP and deserve leadership decisions that prioritize unity, fairness, and the collective future of the party.

Dr. Ampaabeng concluded by urging the party’s leadership to ensure that wisdom, not ego or emotions, guides the handling of the matter as the NPP works toward restoring confidence and strengthening its prospects for victory in 2028.
