The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has launched the district implementation of the government’s Free Primary Healthcare Policy at Sefwi Nsawora in the Akontombra District of the Western North Region.

Speaking at the launch on 1 July 2026, the Minister said the Free Primary Healthcare Policy is designed to complement the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and the government’s commitment to ensuring quality healthcare for every Ghanaian.

He explained that the policy will provide free primary healthcare services, including health screening, blood pressure checks, and malaria diagnosis and treatment at CHPS compounds, health centres, clinics, and polyclinics. He added that the NHIS will continue to cover services at district hospitals, while the government’s healthcare reforms will ensure that patients continue to receive support where NHIS coverage ends.

Mr. Akandoh encouraged all residents to register with and renew their membership of the National Health Insurance Scheme to benefit fully from the country’s healthcare initiatives.

To support the implementation of the policy at the Nsawora Health Centre, the Minister donated two new motorbikes, a delivery bed, and other essential medical equipment to improve healthcare delivery in the area.

The District Chief Executive for Akontombra, Joseph Appiah, commended the Minister for selecting the district to host the district launch of the Free Primary Healthcare Policy.

He disclosed that the Assembly has invested 10 percent of its District Assembly Common Fund in the construction of two CHPS compounds at Abronahia and Ackaakrom, which are expected to be commissioned soon. According to him, the projects demonstrate the Assembly’s commitment to supporting the government’s vision of strengthening primary healthcare services. He assured the Minister that the district remains fully prepared to support the successful implementation of the policy.

The Member of Parliament for Sefwi Akontombra Constituency, Pious Kwame Nkuah, also praised the government for introducing the policy, describing it as a major step towards improving access to quality healthcare.

He, however, appealed to the Minister and the Ministry of Health to provide a new and befitting infrastructure for the Nsawora Health Centre, noting that the current facility is inadequate to meet the growing healthcare needs of the people in the constituency.
