The Western North Regional Coordinating Council has officially signed contracts with various contractors for the construction of 24-hour markets across the region, with work expected to commence soon.
The 24-hour market initiative forms part of a government policy aimed at constructing modern markets in all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) across the country to boost local economic activities.

The Western North Regional Minister, Wilbert Petty Brentum, speaking to the media, indicated that the project aligns with the President’s vision of promoting a 24-hour economy to create employment opportunities for citizens. He emphasized that the markets will play a vital role in supporting traders, especially market women and men, by providing them with improved spaces to sell farm produce and other goods.

According to him, the Regional Coordinating Council followed all due procurement processes before awarding the contracts. He noted that the selected contractors have officially signed agreements with both the Coordinating Council and the respective MMDCEs.

Mr. Brentum further explained that some of the markets will be constructed at existing market sites where trading activities are already ongoing. He assured that all MMDCEs have engaged relevant stakeholders and secured temporary locations for traders to continue their businesses during the construction period.

He added that contractors have been given two weeks to mobilize and move to site, with each project expected to be completed within a two-year period.
