Severe flooding following continuous rainfall has affected several communities in the Aowin Municipality of the Western North Region.

The situation has compelled authorities to temporarily close schools in the municipal capital, Enchi, as floodwaters continue to disrupt normal activities. Reports indicate that more than 4,000 residents have been rendered homeless by the disaster.

Speaking to the media, the Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr. Karim Ndego, confirmed that three persons were swept away by floodwaters. One person has been confirmed dead, one has been rescued, while another remains missing.

Mr. Ndego further disclosed that another incident occurred at Achimfo, where two individuals attempting to return from illegal mining (galamsey) activities were swept away by floodwaters while crossing a river.

One of the victims, Patrick Amoabeng, was rescued, while his friend, popularly known as G-Boy, remains missing.

Mr. Ndego noted that NADMO is facing logistical challenges in responding to the disaster, adding that the continuous rainfall is worsening the situation across the municipality.

“The river is very large, and the rescue operation requires equipment that we currently do not have. We are collaborating with the security agencies and other stakeholders to ensure the missing person is found,” he said.

Narrating his ordeal, Patrick Amoabeng explained that he and his friend had gone for galamsey activities. Upon their return, they realized the river had overflowed its banks, making crossing impossible. They, therefore, spent the night at a nearby community called Tiboahkrom.

According to him, on the morning of June 17, 2026, they attempted to cross the flooded river but were both swept away by the strong currents.

I was fortunate to escape and managed to call for help. Community members tried their best to rescue my friend, but they could not find him. He is still missing in the river, Amoabeng said.

The Enchi Municipal Fire Commander, Rev. Father Emmanuel Kwaku Yeboah ADO III, stated that the rescue team is collaborating with local authorities to intensify efforts to locate the missing person.

He also advised residents to exercise extreme caution during the flooding period.

We urge residents not to attempt crossing flooded rivers or streams. They should also inform family members of their movements when traveling so that assistance can be provided quickly in case of an emergency, he cautioned.
