The Deputy Minister of Transport, Dorcas Affo-Toffey, has held discussions with Houmad Elouazzani, Commercial Director of Ceris Technologies at Tanger Med, on opportunities to advance port digitalisation, strengthen cybersecurity and improve the efficiency of Ghana’s maritime infrastructure.

The engagement focused on leveraging technology and strategic partnerships to modernise port operations, enhance digital security and build resilient maritime infrastructure to support Ghana’s growing transport and trade needs.

Madam Affo-Toffey, who is also the Member of Parliament for Jomoro Constituency in the Western Region, described the engagement as productive, emphasising the importance of exploring innovative solutions to improve port efficiency and safeguard digital systems within the maritime sector.

Port digitalisation has become increasingly important in modern maritime operations, with technology helping to streamline processes, improve information sharing and facilitate the efficient movement of goods. Cybersecurity is equally critical as ports increasingly depend on digital platforms to manage operations and exchange sensitive information.

The discussions with Mr Elouazzani provided an opportunity to explore potential areas of collaboration, particularly in applying modern technology to improve port management, protect digital infrastructure and strengthen the resilience of Ghana’s maritime sector.

The engagement also highlights the growing importance of international cooperation in addressing emerging challenges in the maritime industry, where digital innovation and cybersecurity are increasingly central to competitiveness and operational efficiency.

Hon. Affo-Toffey stressed that strategic partnerships and technology-driven innovation remain essential to the government’s transport and maritime modernisation agenda.

She noted that adopting modern technology and strengthening digital security at Ghana’s ports would be important in positioning the country as a competitive maritime hub in the West African sub-region.

Ghana’s ports play a vital role in facilitating international trade, supporting economic activity and connecting local businesses to regional and global markets. Improving operational efficiency and protecting port systems are therefore essential to enhancing the country’s maritime competitiveness.

The meeting with Ceris Technologies forms part of broader efforts to explore innovative approaches to transport and maritime development.

Although the discussions identified potential areas of cooperation, further engagements and concrete steps would be needed to translate the opportunities explored into practical initiatives.

The Jomoro MP reiterated the importance of embracing innovation and building strategic international relationships that can contribute to a more efficient, secure and resilient maritime sector.

The engagement underscores the need for continued collaboration between Ghana and international technology stakeholders as the country pursues its ambition of modernising port operations and strengthening its position as a leading maritime and trade hub in West Africa.
