The National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Western North Region is preparing for what is expected to be one of the keenly contested regional elections as aspirants gear up to battle for various executive positions.
The party has completed its constituency-level elections and is preparing to hold regional elections from November 13 to 16, 2026, across the country to elect new regional executives.
In the Western North Region, the contest is expected to be intense, with two major camps emerging to compete for the various executive positions.
One camp, known as Team Big Aidoo, is led by incumbent Regional Chairman Michael Aidoo. The team is expected to have the support of most of the current regional executives, except the Nzongo Caucus, which has reportedly aligned with the opposing camp. The incumbent Regional Youth Organizer is also not seeking re-election.
The opposing camp, led by Jerry Kankam Darkwah, is positioning itself to challenge the incumbent leadership across several executive positions. The Nzongo Caucus is among the groups that have reportedly joined this camp, setting the stage for a fierce contest between the two political blocs.
Chairman race takes centre stage

One of the major highlights of the election is the regional chairmanship contest between incumbent Michael Aidoo and Jerry Kankam Darkwah.
Michael Aidoo, who is seeking another term, has served as Regional Chairman for three terms, including one term in the former Western Region and two terms in the Western North Region following its creation.
His experience and years of leadership within the party are expected to play a significant role in his campaign as he seeks to retain the position.
On the other side, Jerry Kankam Darkwah also brings considerable political experience to the contest. He has served two terms as Regional Vice Chairman, one in the former Western Region and another in the Western North Region.

This will be his second attempt at the Western North Regional Chairmanship. He previously contested Michael Aidoo in 2022 but lost the election. He is now returning to challenge the same incumbent in what promises to be another competitive battle.
The rivalry between the two experienced party figures, coupled with the emergence of the two major camps, has made the Western North Regional election one of the contests to watch within the NDC.
The election in the Western North Region is scheduled to take place at the Bia Lamplighter College of Education in the Bia West District on November 13 and 14, 2026.
With both camps determined to secure victory, attention is now focused on the delegates and the strategies each side will deploy to win control of the party’s regional leadership.
