The Sefwi Wiawso High Court has sentenced two individuals, Mr. Kwaku Afukaah and Mr. Kofi Konneh, to one month of imprisonment for contempt of court in connection with the ongoing Boinzan chieftaincy dispute.

On January 2, 2025, LegendReport reported that a group of people, accompanied by macho men, allegedly stormed the Boinzan Chief’s Palace to perform rituals aimed at destooling Nana Ofori Ahenkah II, the Chief of Boinzan.

Prior to the incident, some members of the Agona Royal Family had expressed disagreement with the enstoolment of Nana Ofori Ahenkah II and subsequently referred the matter to the Judicial Committee of the Sefwi Wiawso Traditional Council for adjudication.

Despite the matter being before the Judicial Committee has not given verdict, the group allegedly proceeded with the rituals at the palace. Nana Ofori Ahenkah II and his elders subsequently sought legal redress through the court.

Delivering judgment on June 5, 2026, the Sefwi Wiawso High Court found that the actions of Mr. Kwaku Afukaah and Mr. Kofi Konneh amounted to contempt of court and sentenced both men to one month in prison.

Speaking after the ruling, counsel for the plaintiffs, Anthony Adu Nketiah, said the judgment serves as a warning that parties involved in chieftaincy disputes must respect established legal and traditional dispute resolution processes.

According to him, once a matter is before a Judicial Committee recognized under the Constitution, all parties are expected to wait for its verdict. He emphasized that individuals who are dissatisfied with a ruling have the right to seek further legal redress through the appropriate channels rather than taking actions that undermine the judicial process.

Lawyer Ebenezer Abiaw, counsel for the defendants, stated that although his clients disagree with certain aspects of the court’s decision, they respect the ruling. He added that he would consult with his clients to determine the next course of action.
